If you want to start a real estate career in Ohio, you should consider getting an Ohio real estate license. At first, it may seem a little overwhelming, yet, earning the license may be simple if you follow some of the easy steps mentioned below. 

Requirements for a Salesperson’s License

  • Be 18 years old (or older) and a US citizen or a legal alien (must show proof of permanent residency).
  • Have a high school diploma or its equivalent (must be recognized by the Department of Education).
  • Not be convicted of a disqualifying offense.
  • Find sponsorship from a broker in Ohio.

What are the Education Requirements for an Ohio Real Estate License?

Future salespersons should comply with the following education requirements and complete:

  • 40 hours on Real Estate Principles and Practices
  • 40 hours on Real Estate Law (including civil rights, housing discrimination, and desegregation issues)
  • 20 hours on Real Estate Appraisal
  • 20 hours on Real Estate Finance

For a broker’s license, one should complete the hours mentioned above along with the following courses:

  • Financial Management
  • Human Resources Management
  • Business Economics
  • Business Law

Apply for an Ohio Real Estate Salesperson’s License

Different from other states, it is not possible to take the licensing examination before submitting the application. You should apply to the Division of Real Estate and Professional Licensing.

Fill in the application form and attach the certificate (or its copy) of completion of pre-licensing courses. Do not forget to include the check for the fee of $81.00.

Broker’s License Application

Ohio broker candidates should submit the application along with transcripts of completed courses. In addition, there is a fee of $135.00. Moreover, performing a background check is mandatory as well.

Background Check

Currently, Ohio requires candidates to have their fingerprints taken and complete a background check. The latter includes a criminal records check of the FBI and state records.

After processing the complete application, the Division sends the information to the testing vendor.

The service costs between $50 and $80. The results are ready within 30 days.

Is the Ohio Real Estate Exam Hard?

The next step in the process is sitting for the state licensing examination. In addition, once the Division reviews the application, they issue a Candidate Information Bulletin, which has instructions for scheduling the test. Actually, the exam is hard but not impossible to pass.

The salesperson’s exam consists of State and National portions. Applicants have 180 minutes to answer 120 multiple-choice questions. The passing score for getting licensed is 70%.

Note: do not forget to bring two valid forms of identification to the exam location. They should bear the applicant’s signature.

How Much Does it Cost to Get an Ohio Real Estate License?

You should be ready to spend about $1,500-$2,000 to get your Ohio real estate license. To elaborate, you will need to spend some money on pre-licensing courses. Their fees depend on the school or college that you choose.

Other costs include application and examination fees, as well as fingerprinting fees.
